I know better than anyone the engagement of every farmer to his land.

My name is José Luís, I am a man of science and of the countryside, I know better than anyone the engagement of every farmer to his land. I started working at a very young age in my father’s olive oil mill, dedicated to production of extra virgin olive oils since 1850. I studied in Madrid and later created my own fertilizer and phytosanitary products warehouse. I also worked as an agricultural specialist in charge of different types of crops. It was in 2010 when I achieved my dream: to produce my own extra virgin olive oil.

‘Mudapelos’ is the name of the farm where the ARTOLIO project is developed.

‘Mudapelos’ is the name of the farm where the ARTOLIO project is developed. It has 3.3 ha and is located in the municipality of Marmolejo (Jaen, Spain), in the foothills of Sierra Morena, between the valley of the Guadalquivir river and the gentle hills of the northern countryside of the province. Our olive grove is made up of olive trees over 100 years old with 3 and 4 trunks with a plantation frame of 12×12 meters. It is partially irrigated, using a traditional method. It is a high production olive grove. Since 2010 our family has been producing extra virgin olive oils under the brand “Olvero”, an olive juice, of the ‘Picual’ variety, obtained at the ripening stage (optimum ripeness of the fruit), elaborated only by mechanical procedures. The production is partially controlled, from the olive grove to the market.

Our olive groves are located in the province of Jaen, the world's center of olive oil production.

Our olive groves are located in the province of Jaen, the world’s center of olive oil production, in the municipality of Arjonilla, a rural area characterized by its nature, tradition and environmental quality. Our privileged location makes the ripening of our fruit occur in advance of the arrival of the cold weather, helping to take care of our olives to obtain a magnificent extra virgin olive oil and thus be able to savor the nature. The fruit cleaning is performed in our own olive grove, the transport to the olive mill is by carrying the olives in boxes and the extraction process is carefully taken at a very low temperature.

Our olive oil comes from our centenary olive trees, in a small olive grove in the region of La Loma in Jaen (Spain).

Our olive oil comes from our centenary olive trees, in a small olive grove in the region of La Loma in Jaen (Spain). They are made up some with two trunks, some with three, which have all been traditionally cultivated in a royal, or grid layout, capturing the taste of tradition like no other. Their wide plantation area, which is never below 10 by 10 meters, allows the grove to take up the earth’s nutrients, gives it the space to absorb sunlight and provides it with good ventilation. The farm has been irrigated for 12 years, but irrigation is limited. Our variety is ‘Picual’ and we now invite you to share the tradition by enjoying our Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Our olive grove is in the region of La Loma, in a privileged spot.

Our olive grove is at the region of La Loma, in a privileged spot. They are found in the High Guadalquivir area at 535 meters over the sea level, in the middle of the province of Jaen, which serves as an interfluvial plateau, sloping downwards as the result of the valleys of two rivers: the Guadalimar to the north, and the Guadalquivir to the south. The soil is developed on Oligocene and Miocene sandstone and limestone loams. Its composition includes sand, silt and clay in percentages ranging between 25% and 35% equally, and its texture is clay loam. Its Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and long, warm and dry summers give it a distinctive spicy and bitter quality, characteristics originated by its high content of phenolic compounds. This area has been an olive growing area since at least the eighteenth century.

I descend from family farmers and turned into a professional farmer in 1995.

My name is Francisca Ruiz and I have been a teacher all my life. I descend from family farmers and turned into a professional farmer in 1995. Since then, I have taken several courses related to agriculture and environment. I am also the third generation to grow olive trees.

⸻ About
My goal is the transition to organic and we are already in the first year of the conversion.

My olive grove has a total area of 9.34 hectares, of which 2.91 ha are traditional rainfed olive groves. The fact that we have part of the olive grove irrigated and part in dry land, shows the difference in profitability between them, even being bordering plots, in the dry land olive grove we have trees with little vigour, low productions and long periods with virtually no harvesting. The whole olive grove is a traditional 10 x 10 frame with two trunks, with an average slope of approximately 8% and a total plant density of about 1100 olive trees. My goal is the transition to organic and we are already in the first year of the conversion.

The olive grove is located in the National Park of Sierra Magina in the little village of Torres nearby the town of Mancha Real in Jaen. Due to its geographical location, it has abundant water springs because it has a very rainy climate. These springs give rise to great landscapes. That is why the farm is located in an area full of biodiversity. It combines olive trees with patches of bush vegetation because the olive tree has been gaining ground over the years against bushes. The economy of this area is based on a rural economy based on olive groves and, to a lesser extent, on cherries.

SPAIN

Blas Lanagrán García

I am a businessman who grew up in a family of bakers and farmers.

My name is Blas Lanagran, I am a businessman who grew up in a family of bakers and farmers, a trade inherited from my paternal grandfather. My interest in the olive grove began when I was a child, when we inherited olive tree farms from my father’s and mother’s maternal family. From a very young age, I took charge of my family’s olive grove, I specialized as a professional farmer at the age of 22 and the bakery was left in charge of my sister. Over the years I increased the number of olive grove farms.

⸻ About
The olive variety present on the farm is the 'Picual'

Most of the trees in the olive groves are over a hundred years old. The oldest olive trees initially had 3 to 4 trunks, but with the introduction of mechanization they were adapted to 2 or 3 trunks. This greatly facilitates tillage as well as harvesting. The planting frame is variable, since the olive trees are very old and their planting did not follow a fixed pattern. Therefore, the frame of my trees is usually 8×9, which allows perfectly the growth of vegetation covers and the correct entry of machinery and vehicles for the farm’s work. The olive variety present on the farm is the ‘Picual’, which is the predominant variety in the area and gives the oils greater oxidative stability compared to other varieties, and a higher content of phenolic compounds. The irrigation system, was already installed when we acquired the olive grove, with our own water concession dating back to 1985. Subsequently, modifications were made to the system due to its age, the latest being the installation of a water storage pond at the beginning of 2021.

The olive grove is called ‘Haza de la Iglesia’.

The olive grove is called ‘Haza de la Iglesia’. It’s a farm that belonged to the Church for many years, hence its name. After the Spanish civil war, the land was bought by a farmer, who finally sold it to my family in 2002. The olive grove is located in the countryside of Jaen, with a stream that borders the land, called ‘Arroyo de Arjona’, which gives it many advantages in terms of obtaining water. It should be noted that the plot is within a priority exploitation. On the other hand, the type of soil on the plot is clayey, with a low slope, which is a positive factor when it comes to mechanization. Finally, the climate is Mediterranean, ideal for the correct cultivation of this type of plantation. With respect to the number of hectares that the olive grove has, it is 6,20 ha, with a total of 900 olive trees on the plot. As for the surrounding economy, as the olive grove belongs to the municipality of Villardompardo (Jaen), it is considered a disadvantaged area, within a sea of olive trees that has no industry of any kind, which is called an economy 100% based on the olive grove.
